Ivory Coast and Ghana cement co-operation on cocoa

Ghana and Ivory Coast have agreed details of a plan to collaborate to defend cocoa prices within the framework of a strategic partnership agreement. At a meeting recently held in Accra/Ghana the West African countries adopted a comprehensive plan that reportedly includes a study to address the feasibility of a floor price for cocoa, a joint committee for the promotion of cocoa consumption in both countries, and a commitment to work together on the adoption of the ISO standard for sustainable and traceable cocoa.

The countries also agreed to collaborate on research and forge closer links between the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana and the National Centre of Agronomic Research (CNRA) in Ivory Coast. They also want to address pests and diseases that affect cocoa production in the region, such as cocoa swollen shoot virus. The agreement will take effect in the 2018/19 cocoa season, starting in October, subject to approval by the parliaments in both countries.
